They will open up the images they have been given of a tropical rain forest in Belize and investigate the site from several perspectives. Among the images they can look at are a false color mosaic, a Compressed Stokes image, a vegetation map and key, and various ground photographs and a map of the area. After the students have browsed through the images, they are given specific directions on how to decide what features of the radar image indicate such structures as upland forest, clearcut areas, and roads. Section B - Death Valley, California This is an exercise similar to the one above. Students will first browse through the images included in the directory to see what sorts of information is currently available to researchers. They will then look at the radar images to see if they can produce a vegetation map similar to the one they have been given. Compare it with the radar image collected in 1990 in the Mosaicim.pic. What differences can you see? Why do you think the two images look different? 7) Take a look at the radar image of the Gallon Jug ranch in the file LBandful.pic. Compare it with the ground map shown in the Belizkey.pic file. Draw a similar sketch of the trees and buildings you would see if you walked a 30 meter line (100 yards) near where you live.
