I. Introduction

---------------

PainKeep Arena is a "Mission-Pack" designed for use with the registered version of Quake III Arena. PainKeep Arena not only offers brand new weapons, but also rich environments packed with tons of new sounds, new special effects, great new features, and lots of surprises. Although, PainKeep Arena is primarily focused on DeathMatch style of playing, Team DeathMatch and CTF styles of play are fully supported and offer variant play for some PainKeep Arena weapons.

PainKeep Arena is awesome to play online! We at Team Evolve believe that PainKeep Arena is what DeathMatch should be - Fast, Brutal, and Fun with an incredible assortment of bizarre and lethal weapons.

Since PainKeep Arena is designed as a full featured Mission-Pack for Quake III Arena, a very enjoyable Single Player experience awaits you. Single Player PainKeep Arena includes over twenty maps with a full supply of artificial opponents (Bots) that are well trained in the ways of combat. Single Player mode will offer you a means to hone your skill in the "Keep" without the need for an internet connection. When you are fully trained, come online and play against the pros.

We hope you enjoy the experience of PainKeep Arena,

Team Evolve
Quality over Corporate B.S.!

II. INSTALLING PainKeep Arena 2.7

--------------------------------------

A. REQUIRED VERSION

In order to play PainKeep Arena you must have the full registered version of the id Software game Quake III Arena 1.27g (or higher). Please note: if you have just installed Quake III Arena, then you will need to upgrade to version 1.27g (or higher).

B. Normal Installation

For 2.7 Installation...

PainKeep Arena 2.7 will exist as an update to version 2.6. The update form of 2.7 will have a "U" suffix. Later on Team Evolve may create a full form of the 2.7 installation that will not have a "U" suffix in the filename.

[NOTE - After installing PainKeep Arena 2.7 you will have two pk3 files in your /pkarena directory: pkarena0.pk3 and pkarena1.pk3]

The PainKeep Arena 2.7 "U" Release contains an update to the existing 2.6 full release. You must have PainKeep Arena 2.6 properly installed before you can install 2.7 "U". The update form of 2.7 should be unzipped into the /pkarena subdirectory of your Quake III Arena directory. Under normal conditions, files extracted from the 2.7 update will NOT overwrite existing files in the /pkarena directory. After installing the update you are done and can now enjoy the carnage.

The full form of the PainKeep Arena 2.7 should be installed in the same manner as version 2.6. Please use the following "For 2.6 Installation" instructions to install the full 2.7 release.

For 2.6 Installation...

PainKeep Arena will be available in two types of packages 1) Win-X self-extracting installer and 2) a Zip version for Macs and Linux later on. (NOTE: You only need to choose one method of installation on your workstation)

Install PainKeep Arena so that the \PKARENA directory resides immediately below your \QUAKE II ARENA directory.

The Win-X self-extracting installer will do most of the work by itself and is the recommended manner for installing on Windows based machines. The zip method will require a little thought.

Once PainKeep Arena is installed, look for the startup BAT file and you are ready to play.

The PainKeep Arena 2.6 Release contains 21 Levels of varying styles, atmospheres, and weapons. The full version includes the following maps:

PKAHUB - PainKeep Vote Map
PAINKEEP - Painkeep
PKA0 - Mephisto's hold
PKA1 - The Prison
PKA2 - Darkstone Temple
PKA3 - The Palace of Pain
PKA4 - Obscured
PKA5 - Spear Point
PKA6 - Suicide Staccato
PKA7 - Battered Brains
PKA8 - Dakyne
PKA9 - The Stronghold
PKA10 - Harlequin's Demise
PKA11 - Derelict Point
PKA12 - The Other Side
PKA13 - Techno Mountain
PKA14 - Techwalk
PKA15 - Presence Of Death
PKA16 - G1ZA
PKA17 - Scorn
PKA18 - Deguello

You can pull them up by lowering the console by first

pressing the ~ tilde key, then type either MAP PKA1 or MAP PKA2, etc to load these by name.

- or -

You can start a single player session and battle against Bots by using the in-game menu.

III. WHAT'S DIFFERENT ABOUT PAINKEEP ARENA?

-------------------------------------------

A. Goals

PainKeep Arena goes back to DeathMatch's original premise - "Make other people die". Your mission is to Frag more opponents than any other player, including Bots.

When you start to get good you will notice that certain ways of producing Frags will result in awards given to your player. Receiving in-game awards greatly adds to the fun of the match.

B. Changes

Vote Hub Mode

The Hub is designed for Online play or "Skirmishes" only. The democratic way to play!

By default the game is in "Vote Hub" mode.

The Vote Hub is a special startup level that has entrances to all levels in PainKeep.

This mode will return all players to the Vote Hub after a level is completed. At this point,

run or fight your way to your favorite map entrance. The map with the most players

entering will be the next map played. In the event of "ties", a level will be randomly

selected from among the leading maps.

Once you have voted you will be teleported to a Mosh pit where you compete with other players until the end of the level.

Inventory System

Some of the toys we've added to DeathMatch have a different mechanism of weapon selection.

All hand launched inventory items can be can be cycled through by using "1" key, by default.

You may also setup specific keys to activate PainKeep Arena items by using in game menu options.

IV. CONTROLS

l - Select Last weapon held prior to current weapon

B. Console Commands

/gravitywell
/autosentry
/beartrap
/beans
/gauntlet
/machinegun
/boomstick
/airfist
/nailgun
/grenades
/rockets
/lightning
/magnum
/dragon

Special commands are as follows:

/dragondeploy (* deploys the active PainKeep holadable Weapon on the Dragon *)
/weaplast (* select the last weapon that was held *)
/+button12 (* toggles the holdable powerups, only the top most is active *)

V. Features - The Weapons
-------------------------

** The AirFist

Blast players or objects across the room. Also a great way to launch yourself up and over obstacles or use the airfist to jump to great heights. Defend yourself from rockets or grenades by air fisting them back to the attacker. The airfist has a replenishing ammo meter, when the ammo is at zero no damage will be given to opponents.

(NOTE: objects moved by AirFist blasts will eventually respawn in their original respawn positions)

** Exploding Shells (Double Barrel Shotgun)

Shotgun Shells that are chock full of tiny explosive pellets. Watch the crowd scatter as a bunch of tiny explosions spray the room! This animal is highly lethal in close range.

Note: If you have picked up exploding shells, you must deplete your entire supply before you can shoot normal shotgun shells again. The maximum number that can be carried at any one time is 10

** The Nailgun

This version of an authentic carpenter's Nailgun shoots much higher velocity nails. These nails are hot too! Never touch them until they disappear because not only do they penetrate your enemies, but sizzle your flesh as well. Skilled marksmen can do some really impressive stuff with this gun. The Nailgun is a great tool to use in order to make a hasty escape.

** Chain Lightning Gun

This weapon is a devastating version of the standard Lightning Gun. When the gun is fired and a target is hit (Easier Said Than Done!), the bolt will seek the nearest living target within visual range.

It will continue to jump to all living targets until the player is out of cells or the fire button is released. Targets killed by this bolt will become extra crispy critters! The Chain Lightning Gun utilizes a "lock-on" technology against the initial target making escape a very difficult task. Let your opponent "Ride the Shaft".

** The Magnum

This weapon is not your father's railgun - it is a precision armament that will put a hole into any slow-moving and dim-witted opponent.

** The Dragon

Team Evolves version of the Grappling Hook. Features a "blood red" Dragon tongue, and a unique

"come-here" feature. Ever wished you could reach that Quad Damage across a chasm?

Just stick it with the Dragon and reel 'em in! Or hang around the ceiling and shoot your enemies as they run underneath you. Once the Dragon's tongue is attached to a wall, you can select and use another weapon while being pulled to the "dragon point".

Unique to PainKeep Arena, the Dragon can be used to deploy armaments across the map. All PainKeep Arena weapons (Gravity well, Autosentry, Beartrap, Can of Pork-N-Beans) can be attached to the Dragon's Tongue and then fired across the room.

** AutoSentry

Hate it when someone won't stop following you? Just drop one of these cannons and let them provide a little automated cover fire. The autosentry is a strategic weapon that is used to guard items or corridors.

When carried by the player, the AutoSentry will provide an effective shield against certain weapons.

** Beartraps

Step on it and *SNAP!* The opponent is burdened with this huge trap clamped to their leg.

Note: the trap will eventually fall apart once attached to a player

** Can of Pork and Beans

Ever wished you could carry a health pack around with you? When consumed the Can of Pork and Beans adds 100 health, but can cause embarrassing side effects and give away your location.

The Bean blast is very noxious and it is highly advised that you stay away from players that are out-gassing.

The Beans effect also works mysteriously on the player's armor, but only for a short duration.

** Gravity Well

A Gravity Bomb that spews sparks of lightning and sucks all objects and players within range inward toward a singularity. When opponents actually reach the Well, watch the groovy gib fire-works! Once dropped, make sure you run! (Run Forrest RUN!)

Addtional Info : This is my first attempt at aQ3 mapobject. I thought a differently
styled teleporter might be nice. Hopefully my next attempt
will be a bit smoother. There are also red and blue versions
				for CTF option.

Place the wep7-handcannon.pk3 and in your quake3/baseq3 folder, and
start q3. All railguns will now be handcannons. In the impossible
case you would like to see the old railgun, simply move the
wep7-handcannon.pk3 out of the baseq3 folder.

multiplant_f.md3 a fern
multiplant_f2.md3 another fern
multiplant_p.md3 a somewhat battered palm
multiplant_p2.md3 another palm
multiplant_a.md3 another plant
multiplant_e.md3 an evil plant meant to hurt the player on contact
two shader passes plus lightmap, vertex deformation

how to use place multiplant.pk3 in your /baseq3/ folder
choose one of the multiplant models from the model menu
